One of the most famous architects of the time, Franz Schwechten, was commissioned to design the façade. One of the famous buildings bearing Franz Schwechten's signature was the Anhalter Bahnhof station, built between 1874 and 1880, which was admired the world over. Today, one would say that this masterpiece secured Schwechten a place in the Hall of Fame. He also lived up to his reputation as an “outstanding monumental artist” on behalf of AEG. In 1896/1897, he reworked the “Beamtentor” designed by Paul Tropp at Brunnenstraße 107a in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen. Employees (“civil servants”) and visitors found their way to AEG's largest plant in Berlin at the time through the representative “Officials' Gate”. From 1887, Franz Schwechten expanded the Schultheiss brewery in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, better known today as the “Kulturbrauerei”. The Moabit power station is another extremely successful building by the monumental artist Schwechten. However, every visitor to Berlin will first and foremost think of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz when they think of one of the buildings designed by Franz Schwechten.
