The famous architect Franz Schwechten, the “Schinkel” among the master builders of various factories, railroad stations and churches (Schwechten was also the architect of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz), began building the Moabit power station in 1899. The combined heat and power plant in Berlin-Moabit is still in operation today.
